What does Wannsee mean for …

July 1 - December 30, 2024

In January 2024, the Correctiv network published its research concerning a meeting of the New Right, which took place in a Potsdam villa. During the gathering, representatives from the AfD, Identitarians and CDU discussed ways to expel millions of people from Germany.

A short time later, the term ‘Wannsee 2.0’ began circulating. Despite historical differences, there are some similarities between today’s völkisch deportation fantasies and the historical Wannsee Conference: On 20 January 1942, representatives from the SS, NSDAP and various Reich Ministries met in this villa to discuss the ‘final solution of the Jewish question’, which entailed ‘evacuating’ millions of people. At the Wannsee meeting, however, the participants used the term ‘evacuation’ to disguise their actual intention, which was mass murder.

For many, the villa and ‘Wannsee’ have come to symbolise the Shoah. Yet, this was not always the case: over the decades, the site has meant different things to different people. We have decided to make some of these perspectives visible on the grounds, with 26 different stops.
