What can’t we see?

The perspective of one of the men being led away

Very few photos of anti-Jewish operations were taken by Jewish men or women themselves. Jews are generally the victims of the operation and the photographer’s subject. Hans Hauser, aged 25, is one of the men being led away. Up until this point he has not wanted to leave his homeland, even though in 1935 he had not been allowed to complete his law degree. However, after his experiences of the November pogrom – one aspect of those experiences is shown here – he decides to emigrate. He flees to the US and later fights the Germans as an American soldier.
