What can’t we see?

The perspective of a perpetrator

Only very rarely can we so readily identify Gestapo officials in a photo, for they do not wear uniform. Officials such as these drew up the lists that are now used to arrest Jews. Along with the SS and police, the Gestapo officials guard the men as they are led through the town after their arrest. At the same time they observe the bystanders’ reactions. Do the officials see fear, opposition, or approval in the faces around them?
